If you have a dull, boring wall and would love some ideas on how to create your very own wall gallery or collage, then look no further. Putting together something unique and bespoke for your walls is so easy, and can be very inexpensive too. All it takes is a little imagination and creativity, and in no time at all you can have a striking and interesting wall display! It’s something I love exploring so I thought I’d put together some of my ideas and tips on how you can go about doing this.
Select your display pieces
This is the fun bit. Choosing art, pictures, plates and all kinds of pieces that can make up a display is really the bit where you need to be your most creative. Think differently, there are no rules really, simply choose items that you love, and would love to look at every day.
Why not choose from items like:
- Framed old postcards
- A selection of antique plates
- Free downloadable printouts from blogs
- Family photographs
- Magazine or newspaper clippings
- Framed greetings cards
- Printed instagram photos
- Mirrors
- Typography prints
- Maps
- Clipboards
- Display shelves
- Old suitcases and boxes
- Wall clocks
- Empty pictures frames
- And many more…….
These are just a small selection of ideas that you can take from and use to make your own wall display. Either take one theme and stick with it, or mix up the collage and use different items from different themes to create a more eclectic look.
Choose your layout
This really is down to the space available and the number of items you’d like to include in the collage display. If you want to get it just right, why not cut out templates from brown paper or newspaper and then tape them to the wall as an example. Alternatively, and this is what I like to do, lay them out on the floor in your chosen layout, then move around until you get it just right. You can always take a photo on your phone or camera to help you remember the design once you start picking up the items to actually go up on the wall.
It’s often very handy to create some kind of line, where the edges of some of the frames line up. Maybe across the bottom, or sometimes through the middle. It helps give the display some cohesion and order and helps it feel a little more defined. It’s not obligatory though and sometimes a more random, eclectic layout can be more appealing and relative to your space.
Hang and enjoy
Once you’ve spent the time hanging your display, sit back and enjoy. It’s always worth noting that a the best type of display can always be added to over the months and years, as you discover more treasures that you’d love to showcase. If you’ve run out of space of course, then why not simply start another display on another wall. And if you get tired of the items, simply change them out for different ones, or start again.
Have you created an eye-catching wall display in your home recently. I’d love to know if there are any other interesting or different pieces that you like to include in your collages!
